a bog is defined as a type of wetland that has the characteristic of consisting of spongy, soft, wet ground that is primarily composed of sphagnum moss and peat. a bog has no source of fresh water but precipitation. it originally began as a kettle - a body of water formed from glacial melt. the vegetation grows on top of the water - a mat of spongy moss and peat - even the tamarack pines and winterberry bushes. as we walked on the board walk our steps would move the trees several feet away - it reminded me of the book Life of Pi when he comes across the floating island in the ocean. rather eerie. i was also reminded of the mummified bodies found in the peat bogs of europe preserved so well from hundreds of years ago after being killed for what historians think as a sacrifice. who knows for sure. we had a glimpse of the sandhill cranes but i was unable to get a clear shot of them hidden in the reeds. there was also evidence of 2 birdkills on the boardwalk. all that was left were a small string of intestines, 1 small meaty skull and a bunch of feathers. coyote? hawk?
