1) Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin
Nonfiction - No, it's not a pop psychology guide to get in touch with your inner swimmer and outer fins - Written by a professor of anatomy from the University of Chicago, he tells the story of evolution by examining bones, fossils and DNA. The skeletons of bats, whales and fish - how we share similarities. How our DNA shares the same genomes as tube worms and bacteria. Sounds dry but it's holding my interest. I like thinking that my ancestors were brilliantly colored, hung around coral reefs, floating and waving fins in langorous undulant rolls in motion with the warm seas. Or that at one time, I could have been my just my GI track, just that long tube with a mouth at one end and well, you what at the other end- some cambrian aquatic tube worm. DNA and fossils tell interesting stories and offer proof of what some folks think impossible or ludicrous. For myself, I have no problem claiming distant lineage to a tribolite or crinoid. They lived in harmony with their environment, didn't commit atrocious acts of violence, maim or torture each other, and managed to propagate their species for longer than humans have as of yet.
